FAQs

Does an electric pool heater use a lot of electricity? ›

Electric resistance pool heaters are on the speedy side of pool heaters. But that speed comes at a cost. These heaters consume a heavy amount of electricity since they use resistors to generate heat. And with a COP of less than 1.0, they're often the most expensive pool heater to operate by a large margin.

How much does it cost to run an electric pool heater? ›

The average cost to run a pool heater is $200 to $500 per month for natural gas or electric systems. A heated pool costs $50 to $150 per month using a heat pump and $10 to $25 a month for solar. Operating costs depend on the climate, desired water temperature, utility rates, and the heater size and type.

A propane or natural gas pool heater typically lasts between 7 to 12 years. But electric heaters last between 15-20 years, and solar heaters have a lifespan of about 20-30 years.

Should I leave my electric pool heater on all the time? ›

Also, turn the temperature down or turn off the heater whenever the pool won't be used for several days. This will save energy and money. It's a myth that it takes more energy to heat a pool back up to a desired temperature than you save by lowering the temperature or turning off the heater.

Is it cheaper to heat a pool with gas or electric? ›

Gas is typically cheaper than electric when it comes to the initial cost. However, it relies on the prices of natural gas and propane, meaning that despite the equipment being a bit on the less expensive side, the cost to operate a is usually more expensive in the longer run.

How fast can an electric heater heat a pool? ›

Generally speaking, it's pretty common for a heat pump to take between 12-24 hours to raise the pool water temperature by around 1-2 degrees Fahrenheit which is 0.5-1 degree in Celsius measurement.

Will a black tarp heat a pool? ›

Yes, a black tarp can effectively heat a pool by harnessing the power of the sun's rays.

Should you oversize your pool heater? ›

A pool heater can be undersized: if it cannot replace the heat lost through evaporative cooling, the pool's temperature will fall below the ideal. However, there is no such thing as oversizing a pool heater. The larger the heater's output, the faster it heats the water in the pool, and it will not begin short-cycling.

Should I buy an electric pool heater? ›

For small pools and spas that are kept at consistent temperatures, they're more energy-efficient than gas heaters. Be aware though, for cold climates or fast heating, electric heaters will cost more to operate than other heaters. Money savings can be quite substantial, but only if you live in the right climate area.

At what temp does a pool heater stop working? ›

If it is too cold outside, usually less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, it may be too cold for your heater to run. While some pool heaters can operate in temperatures ranging from 30 degrees Fahrenheit and up, not all do. You may need to wait for warmer weather to run the pool heater.

What temperature should electric pool heater be? ›

Pool water temperatures typically run between 78 and 82 degrees. Any cooler than 78 and you may come out of the pool shivering. Any warmer than 82 and you may feel like you're taking a bath. So you could say that 78 degrees is the minimum swimming pool temperature and anything over 82 degrees could be too warm.

How much does it cost to run an electric heat pump in a pool? ›

Running costs for pool heat pumps are also lower than they would be for electric or gas heaters. For example, an electric heat pump can cost $250–$750 per year, while gas heating can cost $500–$1,500 per year. Solar heating, on the other hand, is economical and can run for as little as $1 a day.

Are pool heaters energy efficient? ›

Heat pump pool heaters work efficiently as long as the outside temperature remains above the 45ºF–50ºF range. The cooler the outside air they draw in, the less efficient they are, resulting in higher energy bills.

Does pool equipment use a lot of electricity? ›

Pools consume a lot of electricity through equipment such as pumps, heaters, and lights. If you want to make a notable change in your household energy bills, you might want to reduce your pool electricity costs first.
