This exeptional example of Jaguar’s 1990’s supercar finished production on the 11th of January 1993, and was delivered in the UK to Mr. Masao Kosugi in June of that year. The car was specified in Spa silver over a smoke grey interior, which is exactly how the car presents today. Begin jaren negentig waren er een aantal auto’s die eruit sprongen door hun exclusiviteit en ongekende prestaties. Denk aan de Ferrari F40, de Porsche 959, of de Bugatti EB110. Vandaag de dag zijn dit welhaast onbetaalbare auto’s geworden, maar er is er een die hierin positief opvalt! De Jaguar XJ220. Deze hoort absoluut in het rijtje van supercars thuis, niet alleen van zijn fenomenale prestaties, maar zeker ook vanwege het verhaal wat om deze auto’s rondgaat. Eind jaren 80 bedacht en ontwikkeld door een groep Jaguar ingenieurs als een project wat ze in vrije tijd tot uitvoer brachten, de bijnaam van dit clubje mensen was dan ook “the Saturday club “. Het prototype was uitgevoerd met een V12 motor en vierwielaandrijving, maar de motor bleek niet door de emissie regulaties te komen in veel landen en de vierwielaandrijving bleek teveel vermogensverlies te veroorzaken op hogere snelheid. Toen de auto dan uiteindelijk gereed was voor productie had deze de twin turbo V6 motor uit de MG metro group B rallyauto gekregen. Met 540 PK was dit ook zeker niet kinderachtig en het maakte de XJ220 de snelste productieauto van zijn tijd. De topsnelheid lag op 220 mijl per uur en gaf de auto tevens zijn naam.

I would like to give special thanks to Jim Randle, Keith Helfet, and Don Law Racing for this opportunity. When asked to reflect on the past, sometimes the best stories surface when there is an object that can be used to shake the memories loose. So, standing in the the company of Professor Jim Randle and Keith Helfet, key members of the secret “Saturday Club” design team that made the Jaguar XJ220 a reality with 23 examples surrounding us, I was curious to see where our afternoon at Don Law Racing would take us. You might remember Ted’s visit to the de facto kings of the contemporary world of the XJ220; our setting was ripe for a discussion about the car’s inception. “It’s wonderful to see…I’ve not seen so many before, not even at the factory,” mentions Jim, former Director of Engineering at Jaguar, as we step into the workshop. It’s interesting to see that it’s not just me whose eyes widen at the sight of all the cars in various configurations.
