Complete list of ingredients with quantities and instructions islocated in the recipe cardbelow

  • Butter: Be sure to use softened, room temperature, unsalted butter for this recipe. You don’t want it to be cold or melted.
  • Granulated and Brown Sugar: While you can make cookies with just one type of sugar, using both gives these cookies amazing flavor and the best texture. They’re soft and chewy from the brown sugar and crisp on the edges from the white sugar.
  • Flour, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Salt, and Cream of Tartar: The dry ingredients for these cookies include a quarter teaspoon of cream of tartar. This secret ingredient makes cookies softer and chewier!
  • Egg: Be sure to use large eggs when baking, and let the egg come to room temperature before mixing it in. A cold egg won’t incorporate as smoothly into the cookie dough.
  • Mix-Ins: White chocolate chips, crushed Oreo cookies, and crushed crispy chocolate chip cookies, such as Chips Ahoy. You’ll also need blue gel food coloring!

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour, cream of tartar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Use a fork or a whisk to thoroughly combine. Set aside.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large, separate mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugars using an electric hand or stand mixer. Mix until smooth. Then add the egg and vanilla, and mix again until combined.
  3. Finish the Base Cookie Dough: Add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture and mix until a dough has formed. The dough may be crumbly at first. Switch to mixing by hand if you need to. Add blue food coloring and mix until you get your desired shade of Cookie Monster blue.

  1. Add the Cookies: Fold in the crushed cookies and white chocolate chips. Mix by hand to evenly distribute the add-ins throughout the dough. Cover and chill the dough for 1 hour before baking.
  2. Get Ready to Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C, and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat mat. Then, use a medium cookie scoop to portion the dough. Roll each portion with your hands into a smooth ball, and place it on the prepared cookie sheet, 2 inches apart.
  3. Bake: Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are starting to brown. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 1 minute before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Top Tips

  • Use Gel Food Coloring: To get the classic Cookie Monster shade of blue, you’ll need a good amount of coloring, and liquid food coloring will add too much moisture to the dough. I love this set of gel colors from Wilton, it comes with 12 colors so you can make all types of fun cookies and frostings!
  • Add More Mix-Ins! You can also add a half cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to this recipe, or increase the amount of cookies you stir in. In total, you can add up to 2½ cups of add-ins to your Cookie Monster Cookies.
  • To Crush the Cookies, use your hands to break them into small pieces, or roughly chop them with a knife.
  • The Dough Will Be Thick, so you’ll likely need to use your hands to finish mixing in the food coloring.
  • Chilling is Important. In this recipe, the dough should be cold when you put it in the oven. If it isn’t, your cookies may spread too much.
  • Be sure to leave enough space around each cookie on the pan. The cookies will expand while baking.

Recommended Cookie Making Tools

These tools are all in my kitchen, and help me bake cookies with ease. Pick up any that you don’t already have, and you’ll be ready for baking any time.

  • Pyrex Mixing Bowls: There’s something about these clear glass mixing bowls that brings me back to baking with my mother. They are a must for me, even though I’ve tried other bowls, I still come back to these every time.
  • Hand Mixer: No need to use a fancy stand mixer for a batch of cookies when a hand mixer does the job just fine. I use this one from Kitchenaid.
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons: This set from OXO is just so well designed! There are magnets in the handles so they stack and stick to each other perfectly.
  • Kitchen Scales: for measuring ingredients or portions by weight, this glass kitchen scale is my favorite.
  • Cookie Scoop: This scoop is a small size, and makes one tablespoon sized scoops, perfect for most drop cookie recipes. I suggest keeping a medium cookie scoop on hand as well.
  • Cookie Sheet: I love my Nordic Ware half sheet pans. They are very high quality and last forever.
  • Silpat: To line the cookie sheets, a Silpat silicone mat in half size is perfect for making everything non-stick, and you’ll never need to buy parchment paper again.

Storing Tips

You can store Cookie Monster cookies in an airtight container or resealable bag for up to 5 days. They will stay best if stored at room temperature rather than in the fridge.

Freezing Cookies

These cookies freeze really well, and there are two ways to do it:

  1. Freeze Unbaked.Scoop the dough into balls, place on a cookie sheet and freeze for 2 hours. When the cookie dough is frozen solid, remove the balls from the cookie sheet and place them in a zip-top bag. This way, you can take out as many as you like and bake from frozen but make sure to adjust the baking time.Freeze for up to 2 months.
  2. Freeze Baked. After the cookies are baked and cooled completely, place them in a freezer-safe zip-top bag andfreeze for up to 1 month. Before serving, let them sit at room temperature for 30 minutes or microwave for a few seconds.

FAQs

How do I get the right cookie monster blue color?

I used an entire tube of blue gel food coloring from the grocery store. You may need more or less food coloring, depending on the brand and type you’re using. Cake decorating gel colorings, like from Wilton or Americolor is more concentrated, so you might only need a handful of drops.

Can I add different kinds of cookies to cookie monster cookies?

Of course! The more cookies, the better. Try chopped crispy peanut butter cookies, shortbread cookies, or even graham crackers in this recipe.

Can I make these cookies without the blue dye?

Yes, these cookies are equally tasty without making them blue, but the color makes them a bit more fun! You could try stirring in some blue sprinkles to get a similar “cookie monster” effect too.

Cookie says, “C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me,” But I say that’s not good enough – C is also for Cookie Monster Cookies! Enjoy this fun recipe that’s perfect for all of the cookie monsters in your life. Don’t forget to Pin it so that you can make it again!
